It's My Story!
In today’s culture there is a tension between consumerism and serving. What you want, what you want to do and when you want it are thoughts that often drive our actions and cause us to lose track of others and focus on ourselves. Skylar however is never one to back away from an opportunity to serve. Through seeing the hearts of leaders serving in the church and serving others himself, Skylar has come to experience an amazingly authentic community.
Skylar first heard about Living Water through a college group in Shelton. Excited about the chance to find a community in a similar stage of life as himself he didn’t hesitate to join them. From his first time at Living Water, he recalls loving how relatable the sermons were and how he felt welcomed like part of the family by the other students in Generation United.
On day one, Skylar says he "felt needed and wanted at Living Water." From his peers to the leadership, he felt that people genuinely cared for him. "Probably the biggest leadership influence for me at Living Water would be Christina Wagaman,” Skylar said. Christina pastored our Living Water College group for the last seven years and stepped down recently in June. “She got me to go on the Mexico Mission trip this year, and I loved the preaching in church so much that I invited my friends every week. We would just all carpool and get as many people as we could to come every week.”
Largely influenced by Christina and other leaders like Pastors Steven and Beth, Skylar has stepped into a leadership role himself by finding ways to serve the people around him. He is currently serving in the 4th and 5th grade classroom on Sunday mornings. He also volunteers at Living Water College on Thursday nights. Whether he is greeting, assisting with the offering or joining in the prayer team, there is life transformation that happens through placing others above yourself. When we realize that the church is designed to be a people centered tool for God instead of a building, like Skylar, we can see our engagement with people grow and church become something active and truly life giving.
